About C. E. Mainprice Co.

C. E. Mainprice Co. was founded in 1955 by Charles E. Mainprice, and has been offering value-added product for over 50 years.  We pride ourselves as innovators and entrepreneurs.

In keeping with this philosophy, we invented the first disposable deposit bag in 1983, at the request of a large Northern California bank.  At that time, the technology did not exist to manufacture such a product in a production line.  Hence we had to first design the manufacturing process, and then the bag.

Today, disposable bank deposit bags are the standard of the retail banking industry.  Even so, we were not satisfied to just play to the tune of the banks who became - and still remain - the chief buyers of this product.

Although we counted almost every bank in the western United States as a customer, we realized they were not the best customer for us.  Banks do not prioritize the quality of the bag they purchase, or the issues with how their bags fit their customers' needs. In addition, they were able to drive down the price we could charge, and not pass along savings to the end user.

In 1986 we made a decision to gradually disassociate ourselves from all of our major banking customers, in order to provide a direct source of supply to their customers.  We discovered that most customers preferred dealing directly with the bag company.  Today we have very few bank customers, but thousands of their customers.

Over 20 Years of Experience

We can confidently say that there is no company in America that has more knowledge and experience in disposable security.  We have dealt in virtually every industry that has a need for our products.

Our Founder - Charles E. Mainprice (1914-2003)

Charles Mainprice was born in 1914 in Spokane Washington.  His father left when he was 9 years old, leaving Charles, his mother and sister to fend for themselves.  He was forced to raise himself and developed his philosophy of life from books and heroes of the times.

Charles worked his way through college and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1940.  He worked as a salesman for Folgers Coffee, and eventually Coast Envelope Company.  However, when Coast Envelope attempted to force him into a non-competition agreement should he quit the firm, C. E. Mainprice refused.

In 1955 he struck out on his own and founded C. E. Mainprice Co. as a manufacturers' representative for custom mailing envelopes with the entire west coast as his territory.  In 1964 he developed a plastic envelope for transporting packaging lists on packages via a pressure-sensitive adhesive.  This was cutting-edge technology at the time, and the Pressure Sensitive Packing List Envelope was born.

Through the years C. E. Mainprice Co. has maintained its reputation as a company ready to take on the challenges of developing products others were unwilling to tackle.  Charles Mainprice always maintained that the secret to his good health and long life was his penchant to try new ideas.  He remained actively involved at our firm until the age of 86.  He died peacefully in 2003, one day before his 89th birthday.  Though he is sorely missed his legacy carries on with his son Bruce, who has been the primary management for C. E. Mainprice Co. since 1982.

Current President – Bruce L. Mainprice (1951- )

Bruce Mainprice joined C. E. Mainprice Co. in 1982 after several very successful years working as an outside salesman in the tool industry.  He was experienced in handling large and small manufacturing companies.  The company had suffered the loss of several key personnel, and the consequence was a decline in sales. The company needed a shot of new energy.

Bruce added a new vitality to C. E. Mainprice Co., with a dream to improve the company’s current product offering and create new ones.  The concept of “value added” products led him to develop a custom packaging division. This allowed people -  who otherwise lacked the opportunity - to get custom-designed and custom-printed packaging.

In 1983, he was asked by Crocker National Bank to look into developing a disposable bank deposit bag.  After 8 months of research, trial and error, TamperTite was born and Crocker National Bank gave the company its first order for 250,000 bags.

As more and more banks adopted the concept of the disposable bank deposit bag, Bruce realized that the real market was being diluted by standardized sizes of bags and less flexibility.  Hence, in 1986, he decided to slowly disassociate the company from the banks and go directly to the ultimate user of the bag.  Though banks offered larger orders, they were more focused on price than quality. They also limited the choice to one or two sizes and styles.

Today, Bruce’s ambition is to minimize the banks' influence over this product in the interest of preserving the quality and security of this important tool.  Like his father before him, he still maintains the he never met a person that complained about buying the best.
